Israel to Expand Lebanon Operation, Target Hezbollah South of Litani River

(MENAFN) Israel is planning a large-scale military push into southern Lebanon, with the objective of taking control of territory south of the Litani River and dismantling the military capabilities of Hezbollah, according to reports citing Israeli and US officials.

The planned move would represent a major escalation and could become the most extensive Israeli ground incursion into Lebanon since the 2006 Lebanon War. Reports indicate that such an operation may further entangle Lebanon in the broader regional conflict involving Iran.

A senior Israeli official described the potential strategy by drawing parallels to earlier operations in Gaza, stating: “We are going to do what we did in Gaza,” referring to the destruction of buildings that Israel claims are used by Hezbollah for storing weapons and launching attacks.

According to reports, a military campaign of this magnitude could result in a lengthy Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon. Officials in Beirut are reportedly concerned that Hezbollah’s ongoing rocket fire could bring severe destruction to the country.

The government led by Benjamin Netanyahu had previously tried to limit escalation in Lebanon in order to maintain focus on the confrontation with Iran. However, this approach shifted after Hezbollah reportedly launched more than 200 missiles in coordination with Iran earlier this week, according to an Israeli official.

“Before this attack, we were ready for a ceasefire in Lebanon, but after it, there is no way back from a massive operation,” one senior Israeli official said.
