Israel to Move Forward with First Stage of Trump’s Truce Plan

(MENAFN) Israel is moving ahead with the initial stage of a ceasefire framework proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, following an official endorsement from Hamas, the office of the Israeli Prime Minister announced Saturday.

“The Israeli government would continue working with the US administration to end the war in line with the 'principles set out by Israel, which align with President Trump's vision,'” the office said in a statement.

According to multiple media reports, the Israeli military has been directed to reduce operations in the Gaza Strip, as preliminary negotiations are expected to begin shortly.

Hamas formally responded to the U.S.-backed proposal on Friday, agreeing to a comprehensive deal that includes releasing all Israeli hostages, returning the remains of deceased individuals, and relinquishing control of Gaza to a neutral Palestinian technocratic administration.

Trump had given Hamas a Sunday deadline of 6 p.m. Washington time (2200 GMT) to approve the plan, which he unveiled earlier this week.

Under the proposal, Gaza would be transformed into a demilitarized zone, governed temporarily by an independent authority under international oversight, led directly by Trump through a newly established monitoring body.

The agreement outlines a strict 72-hour window for Hamas to free all Israeli hostages, in return for Israel releasing hundreds of Palestinian detainees.

Additional provisions include an immediate end to hostilities, the disarmament of all militant factions in Gaza, and a phased Israeli withdrawal. The coastal enclave would then come under the administration of a technocratic body, supervised by a U.S.-led international coalition.

Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza—home to roughly 2.4 million people—for nearly 18 years. In March, it intensified the siege by closing border crossings and halting deliveries of food and medicine, driving the region to the brink of famine.

Since October 2023, Israeli airstrikes have killed close to 66,300 Palestinians, the majority of them women and children. The United Nations and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly cautioned that Gaza is becoming unlivable, as displacement, hunger, and disease spread rapidly across the territory.
