Poland Deploys Troops to Borders
This move comes as Warsaw recently reinstated border checks, attributing the decision to a noticeable increase in unauthorized migration.
While all three countries are part of the European Union, the bloc has been facing a prolonged refugee crisis, which began around 2015 due to conflicts in the Middle East and Africa, and was later intensified by the war in Ukraine.
According to a formal declaration released on Friday, President Nawrocki confirmed that the new border measures would begin on October 5 and remain in place until April 4, 2026.
The resolution underscores Poland’s long-term approach to dealing with migration pressures along its borders.
Earlier, in July, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz disclosed that 700 soldiers had already been dispatched to reinforce the country’s western boundary.
He also outlined intentions to send as many as 5,000 additional troops to support border patrol operations.
In a separate announcement made on Wednesday, the Polish Interior Ministry revealed that the temporary border checks would be prolonged until April 2026.
These controls had initially been brought back in early July.
The ministry's declaration quoted Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski, who stated, “we are extending border controls with Germany and Lithuania to monitor the migration route leading from the Baltic states, through Poland, to Western Europe.”
