Global take on small business news

OpenAI Surpasses SpaceX Becoming World’s Most Valuable Startup

(MENAFN) OpenAI has emerged as the globe’s most valuable startup, surpassing Elon Musk’s SpaceX, according to a report by a news agency on Thursday.

This significant achievement follows the sale of approximately $6.6 billion worth of shares by both current and former OpenAI employees through a secondary market transaction.

Earlier this year, the company behind ChatGPT was valued at roughly $300 billion, while SpaceX held a valuation near $400 billion.

However, the recent deal has propelled OpenAI’s valuation beyond $500 billion, as stated by an individual familiar with the agreement.

This surge in value coincides with OpenAI’s discussions with Microsoft about reorganizing into a more conventional for-profit corporation.

Microsoft, one of OpenAI’s closest collaborators and largest investors, has poured billions into the company while also expanding its own artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, voiced concerns last month about the rapid progress in AI technology potentially threatening Microsoft’s core operations.

The company has already reduced its workforce by over 15,000 employees this year amid a broader restructuring effort.

Founded in 2015 as a nonprofit research organization, OpenAI initially aimed to develop artificial intelligence “to benefit humanity as a whole.”

The company gained widespread recognition following the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, which quickly attracted millions of users.

Since then, OpenAI has introduced a succession of progressively advanced AI models, including GPT-5 in August 2025.

The organization has also secured major infrastructure deals with key partners like Oracle and SK Hynix.
