Hamas approves key elements of US truce proposal
(MENAFN) A senior Hamas figure, Mousa Abu Marzouk, stated on Friday that the Palestinian resistance movement has accepted U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed ceasefire framework for Gaza “in principle,” while noting that its execution would depend on further discussions.
Speaking to a regional news outlet, Abu Marzouk explained that Hamas “would hand over its weapons to a future Palestinian state,” emphasizing that the group views the destiny of the Palestinian people as “a national matter that Hamas alone cannot decide.”
“We agreed to the US plan in its main outlines, as a principle,” he said, clarifying that the next step “requires detailed negotiations through mediators.”
He added that Hamas “will enter negotiations over all issues related to the movement and its weapons,” noting that “all the details concerning the peacekeeping force require understandings and clarification.”
Abu Marzouk further elaborated that “Hamas will hand over weapons to the coming Palestinian state, and whoever governs Gaza will hold the weapons.” He reiterated that “shaping the future of the Palestinian people is a national issue that Hamas alone cannot decide,” urging Washington to “look positively at the future of the Palestinian people.”
He also mentioned that “there was a national agreement to hand over Gaza’s administration to independents whose reference is the Palestinian Authority.” According to him, Hamas remains “a national liberation movement,” insisting that “the definition of terrorism in the plan cannot be applied to it.”
Previously, Hamas announced its approval of key elements of the U.S. proposal, including the release of all Israeli captives, the transfer of deceased bodies, and the handover of Gaza’s governance to an independent Palestinian body.
In a statement shared on Telegram, the organization emphasized that “other issues raised in President Trump’s proposal concerning the future of the Gaza Strip and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people are tied to a unified national position based on relevant international laws and resolutions.”
A Palestinian source confirmed that Hamas had sent its official response to mediators and sought clarifications on several points. The group added that it had carried out “in-depth consultations within its leadership institutions and broad consultations with Palestinian forces and factions, as well as with mediators and friends, to reach a responsible position in dealing with US President Donald Trump’s plan.”
Hamas reaffirmed its willingness to “immediately” engage, through mediators, in talks to negotiate the details of the proposal.
