Trump Reveals More Measures to Crack Down on Crime in D.C

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order mandating "additional specific actions" aimed at intensifying efforts to "further crack down on crime" in Washington, D.C., while signaling plans for broader National Guard deployment across the country.

The order requires the secretary of defense to create a "specialized D.C. National Guard unit" specifically trained to uphold public safety and order in the capital when deployed. It also demands that state National Guards receive comparable training and remain prepared to help control civil unrest across the country.

Additionally, the order requires the defense secretary to guarantee the readiness of a National Guard quick reaction force capable of "rapid nationwide deployment" whenever necessary.

The executive order further instructs the National Park Service to "hire additional United States Park Police officers" to bolster security in Washington, D.C., and directs the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia to "hire additional prosecutors" targeting violent and property crimes.

Media described the move as "the clearest sign yet he intends to expand the U.S. military's role in domestic law enforcement activities across the country." The report also highlighted that these forces generally operate under state governors’ command and that the order does not clarify the chain of command for units outside Washington if a governor declines their deployment.

This order comes days after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth instructed National Guard troops patrolling Washington streets to carry their service weapons.

At a White House briefing on Friday, Trump indicated Chicago could be the next focus for federal crime interventions, following several days of action in the capital. He also mentioned New York alongside Chicago as cities where he wants the National Guard deployed to combat crime.

On Sunday, Trump threatened to extend military deployments to Baltimore amid a dispute with Maryland Governor Wes Moore, who opposed the National Guard’s presence in D.C. and invited Trump to visit Maryland to discuss public safety.

Trump initially announced on August 11 at a White House press conference that he was deploying the National Guard to restore law and order in Washington, D.C. He cited Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Baltimore, and Oakland—cities led by Democratic officials—as struggling urban centers in need of assistance.
